Loskop Dam Nature Reserve
North of Middelburg, and only 4 km from the golf course, is the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve. This reservoir was created in 1938 by the construction
of a 40m/130ft high dam on the Olifants River. Near the reservoir is a lookout from which there
are magnificent views of this region of wooded hills.
There are close to 70 species of mammals on the reserve including White Rhino, Buffalo and the illusive Leopard.
Some of the scarce species like Oribi and Sable Antelope also enjoy special protection. Because of the mountainous
terrain the reserve is quite diverse in habitat and thus supports some 70 species of mammals.
There are accommodation for visitors in the form of holiday chalets and a various camping sites.
Experience a game drive in open Landrovers or go by boat with one of our qualified
field guides and share in the rich legacy of Loskop Dam’s wide variety of wildlife including
hippo, leopard, buffalo, rhino and giraffe.

The two main hiking trails offer two-day circular hikes of ±16 km and 8 km each. Accommodation
facilities include four choices. One of these, a rustic base camp on the banks of the Wilge
River, offers accommodation for up to 30 hikers in several separate huts.
Just before the entrance of the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve you will find the Loskop Reptile Park which
is host to of scary scaly characters which you would rather see behind glass, thick glass.
The collection of some 20 snakes include a good representation of the snakes in the Loskop area and you
will find Black Mamba, Snouted Cobra (Egyptian cobra), Mozambiquan spitting cobra, boomslang and rinkhals –
which you will find more towards the highveld. Try visiting during summer times. The crocodiles are fed every
Sunday at 15:00. There is also a curio shop, other reptiles as well as soft furry animals!
